10 things you can do

The average American lifestyle demands 1,800 gallons of water a day.

  1. Choose outdoor landscaping appropriate for your climate. Native plants and grasses that thrive on natural rainfall only are best.
  2. Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators. Because you’re saving hot water, you’ll also reduce your energy bill. If you’re in the market for a toilet, buy a low-volume, ultra low-volume, or dual-flush model. Fix leaky faucets. All those wasted drops add up—sometimes to 10-25 gallons a day. Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when full. When it’s time to replace them, buy a water- and energy-efficient model. Remember, saving water saves energy, and saving energy saves water. Eat a bit less meat, especially beef. A typical hamburger can take 630 gallons to produce. Buy less stuff.  Everything takes water to make. So if we buy less, we shrink our water footprint.
  3. Recycle plastics, glass, metals, and paper. Buy re-usable products rather than throw-aways, as it takes water to make most everything.
  4. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth and washing the dishes. Shave a minute or two off your shower time. Millions of people doing even the little things makes a difference.
  5. Know the source of your drinking water—the river, lake, or aquifer that supplies your home.  Once you know it, you’ll care about it. You just won’t want to waste water.

Fresh water

We all know that we have been selfish when it comes to the fresh water supply and that we are taking it for granted. But I bet you didn't know that even the simplest things need large amounts of water.

To create .5 kilgrams of chocolate, it will take 12 000 litres of water
To create 500 sheets of paper, it will take 5 000 litres of water
To create .5 kilogram of soy beans, it will take 3 331 litres of water
To create .5 kilogram of rice, it will take 818 litres of water
To create 3.8 litres of water, it will take 1 700 litres of water

Trees Please

  • Trees provide shade and shelter, reducing yearly heating and cooling costs by 2.1 billion dollars.

  • Did you know that trees are the longest living organisms on earth?

  • The world's oldest trees are 4,600 year old Bristlecone pines in the USA.

  • The world's tallest tree is a coast redwood in California, measuring more than 360 ft or 110 m.

  • Trees keep our air supply fresh by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.

  • Trees located along streets act as a glare and reflection control.

    Eco Gadgets

Every where we look, people, places and things are going green. Things we do on a daily bases, places we travel to are doing things in order to help our environment. We've all been told to turn off tvs and computers when you aren't using them, shut the lights off when you leave a room, take showers not baths, turn the water off when brushing your teeth. But what about the little things that we can't always be turning on and off?
